Approaching companies direct: Action plan

Commencing your search

  • Make a list of companies that you would be interested in working for.
  • Place the companies’ names on an Excel spreadsheet, noting their website, contact details. Include columns for jobs on websites, contact information, names etc.

Routine

  • Once a week try and achieve a target of how many companies you are going to contact direct. This could be anything from 3-20 companies. Record all the information on the spreadsheet.
  • Keep looking at websites of companies on your database as they may have a new job advertised.
  • Don’t depend on a vacancies list on a company’s website, quite often they will forget to update it and they may have vacancies in the company which are not listed.  Even if you find work it may not be your dream job so it can always be worth revisiting your database at later times, your dream job just may be advertised. Note if the action plan you have decided on is not working then enact plan B using the same theories. Always be positive and don’t be afraid to alter things, the key is to continue being proactive.
